Étoile Trio in Recital
Sophie Cowall (mezzo-soprano) • Evan O’Connor (baritone & viola) • Eric An (piano)

The Austral Salon of Music and VCASS are delighted to present the Étoile Trio, three outstanding young musicians whose artistry and achievements mark them as rising stars of Melbourne’s classical music scene. Together they will present an engaging programme of songs and chamber works by some of our favourite composers.

Meet the Artists

Sophie Cowall – Mezzo-Soprano

Award-winning mezzo-soprano Sophie Cowall is a student at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School (VCASS) and a member of Victorian Opera’s VOYCE programme. In 2025, at just sixteen, she became the youngest winner of the prestigious Freemasons Vocal Senior Championship Challenge. Sophie has appeared as soloist with the Inner West Symphony Orchestra, The Star Chorale and the National Boys Choir of Australia, and has also performed on Melbourne’s 3MBS Fine Music broadcasts.

Evan O’Connor – Baritone & Viola

Evan O’Connor, a baritone, is also studying at the VCASS, where he performs as both a vocalist and violist. As a singer, he performs with the VCASS Chamber Choir and Nocturnal Nine Ensemble and is a member of Victorian Opera’s VOYCE youth programme, with appearances at the Melbourne Recital Centre and on 3MBS Fine Music Melbourne.

Alongside his vocal studies, Evan is an accomplished violist, having served as Principal Viola with the Melbourne Youth Orchestras and also selected for the prestigious Australian Youth Orchestra Flagship Orchestra. Evan has also participated in other major national programs including the ACO Academy, and the YMS National Academy and as a guest soloist for the National Boys Choir of Australia's Winter Concert at Robert Blackwood Hall, Monash University.

Eric An – Piano

Eric An is an accomplished collaborative pianist whose sensitive musicianship has made him an ideal partner for singers and instrumentalists alike. A fellow VCASS musician, he performs regularly with the Étoile Trio and has appeared on Melbourne’s 3MBS Morning Recital broadcasts.

Program

The recital will feature a most enjoyable selection of vocal solos, duets and chamber music from the Classical and Romantic repertoire, showcasing the versatility and musicality of these exceptional young performers.

Join us for an afternoon celebrating the next generation of Melbourne’s classical artists at the Austral Salon of Music in St Peter’s Hall.
