RUBY CHEYNE CLASSICAL GUITAR

Ruby Cheyne is an Australian classical guitarist and emerging artist currently studying at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, where she studies with renowned guitarist, composer, and Head of Guitar Ken Murray. A 2025 graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School, Ruby completed an intensive, performance-focused music program and served as Music Captain during her final year.

Ruby’s artistic practice is centred on Australian composers and contemporary guitar repertoire, with a particular interest in the works of Phillip Houghton and Richard Charlton. She is drawn to repertoire that explores the expressive, textural, and contemporary possibilities of the classical guitar, and is developing a distinctive artistic voice through her engagement with Australian and contemporary music.

Ruby began her musical training through the Suzuki method, establishing a strong foundation in aural awareness, musical memory, and sensitivity to sound and expression. Since then, she has continued to develop her performance practice through intensive study, competition, and a growing range of performance opportunities.

Her achievements include First Prize at the Altamira Guitar Festival Competition at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music in 2025, as well as First Prize at the Melbourne Guitar Festival Competition in 2019. Ruby has also performed numerous times as a live-to-air artist on 3MBS, gaining valuable experience performing for a broadcast audience. 

Everyone is welcome to attend Ruby’s wonderful recital which includes music by Villa-Lobos, J S Bach, Houghton, de Falla.
